Fernando Saunders is a giant in the music industry. The bassist, singer, somposer, writer and producer collaborated with numerous giants in the world of pop, rock and jazz. Among others he played in the studio or on stage with John McLaughlin, Jan Hammer, Jeff Beck, Tony Williams, Steve Winwood, Marianne Faithful, Pat Benatar, Kip Hanrahan, Larry Young and Heart.
Saunders achieved worldwide attention during his 25 year partnership with Lou Reed. With the New York rock legend he toured all over the world and recorded albums like The Blue Mask, Mistrial and Ecstasy. He is also featured in Reed films as A Night With Lou Reed, Rock and Roll Heart and Berlin.
Saunders is a technical gifted bassist with a distinctive, emotional and soulful style, which he partly creates by playing fretless basses. Lou Reed called Saunders’ signature style ‘Fernandizing’: when he plays it’s like he sings or talks to you. People who are acquainted with Reed’s work recognize Saunders’ sound immediately.
Since 1989 Saunders also records solo albums. On these he manifests himself more as the multi-instrumentalist. Plant A Seed is his most recent work. Besides playing multiple instruments, Saunders is a meritorious singer. He shows a relaxed, soulful even hypnotizing voice. The musical frame of his work is diverse and best defined as a combination of pop with folk, world, latin, soul, R&B and jazz influences.
Since a couple of years the Detroit born Saunders lives and Works in the Czech city Ostrava. During his collaboration with Lou Reed he got inspired by the music and art scene in the country and the general European culture. His band consists mainly of Czech musicians.
