Maaike den Dunnen is a versatile musician: she’s not only a singer, she writes, composes, arranges and from time to time even plays the piano. Though Den Dunnen is a visible presence in the world of jazz since 2009, it wasn’t until 2013 when she released her debut Arrival to critical acclaim.
North Sea Jazz
In 2011 Maaike performs with her European Quartet during the North Sea Jazz Festival. That same year she wins the title Outstanding Performance in two categories in the DownBeat Student Music Awards by the renowned jazz magazine DownBeat.
In 2009 Maaike represents The Netherlands in the European Jazz Orchestra, led by famous big band leader Peter Herbolzheimer. For three weeks she tours through East Europe with this company.
Though on her album Arrival she approaches from traditional jazz patterns, Maaike den Dunnen sounds fresh and modern. She makes the music accesible without loosing the essence of jazz. Her songs sound intelligent, lyrical and contain a slice of humor.
Den Dunnen mostly pens her own songs but also surprises with tasty covers. For example on Arrival she transforms Billy Joel’s And So It Goes to a smokey jazz club arrangement. Though, one of the most outstanding arrangements is the 90’s house hit Show Me Love by Robin S. which sounds irresistible in a melodic driven rhythm of acoustic instruments. Maaike convinces with a large amount of guts and creativity.
